The Metroplexers Play Non-Stop Party Music!

February 22nd, 2013 by Mike

The Metroplexers are sounding great and can provide your party, special event, wedding, corporate function, etc. with an exciting live-music show that is fun for all ages.  We are a four-piece band with guitar, bass, keyboards and drums.

All four of us are also singers, so harmony vocals and a variety of vocal textures are all part of our show.  And since we are a smaller band, we can play in places where others cannot.  We can also add DJ & MC services to your event for “the perfect mix”.

Check out the partial list of the songs we play:

Wedding & Special Event Band – The Metroplexers

September 18th, 2012 by Mike

Non-stop Party Rock! That is the motto of DFW party band, The Metroplexers.

The Metroplexers are having a great year playing weddings, special events, and even special night club showcases.  Most professional party bands in the DFW area are too expensive for a lot of budgets or they are simply too big.  Did you know that many venues do not allow bands of 5-pieces or more?  Lots of bands are just too big or too loud for many events.

That is why The Metroplexers were designed specifically to be wedding, party, and corporate friendly.  All-time party song favorites from the 1980s, 1970s and 1960s played live along with full DJ & MC services by Mike Mahnich (who plays keyboards in the band).  Check them out tomorrow at Lone Star Roadhouse in Dallas.

UpLights and GoBos can transform a room…

August 19th, 2011 by Mike

UpLights and GoBo Monograms are some of the most popular options for wedding receptions and other special events. They can be customized for your personal tastes in infinite combinations and allow for a total room transformation.

With the right pre-planning, a party or event coordinator can save literally hours of setup and decorating time by bringing in an UpLighting and GoBo package. Compared to draping, paper, or other traditional decoration option, a lighting package is more economical too. Nothing has more impact on a plain/boring room than an UpLight / GoBo package. I danced with Cinderella (and Snow White too).

February 21st, 2011 by Mike

If you have read about me and know a bit of my history as a DJ & MC, you know that I have been part of thousands of events; hundreds of weddings over the years, lots of birthdays, school dances, etc.  But nothing gets me emotional like a Daddy Daughter Dance.

I always have a few on the books this time of year and since I have girls of my own, they always have a special meaning for me.  This past week, I was so excited to be a part of Life Time Fitness – Plano and their annual Daddy Daughter event.

Many DJ’s advertise that they never play certain songs or that if you are a DJ who does play them then you must be a real dud.  I disagree.  With the exception of songs that contain swear words or are offensive in some way, I believe that a quality DJ must be able to keep as many tricks up his sleeve as possible in order to play to the audience that is being entertained.  In the case of this weekend’s dance, it was mainly girls from 6 – 10 years old.

This requires an extra degree of care, patience and understanding of how children react to certain songs.  Do they know the song?  Are the music & lyrics appropriate to the age group?  Can a simple dance be instructed or modified for younger kids?  Does the music also have special meaning to the fathers at the event?  Are little girls in dresses, heels, and tiaras able to have fun and still act like little princesses?

It may be a lot to think about, but when you have hundreds of people asking you as the disc jockey to help create an atmosphere that will be a life-long memory, I want all of my options available.  This is why you will hear all-time classics at this type of dance that you would rarely hear at a wedding or party for people in their teens and older.  Some DJ’s are terrified of being perceived as “cheesy” – I say they should be more concerned with whether or not their guests had a fantastic time filled with once-in-a-lifetime moments.  Never confuse “cheese” with a DJ & MC who aims to please.  ;^)

25th Anniversary as a DJ & MC!

February 16th, 2011 by Mike

This year is my 25th year working as a DJ & MC.  I started as a teenager (don’t do the math, I’m still really young!) and somehow just kept on going.  Everybody has to start somewhere and thankfully someone snapped this photo of me at my very first gig in 1986 right here in North Texas.

Over the years I have worked for many different DJ and entertainment companies, hired and trained literally dozens of other disc jockeys, and been a salaried Entertainment Coordinator in charge of hundreds of events per month.  As a result, I have been a part of too many events to even count (my best estimates put it at around 5,000 events with close to 500 of those being weddings).  I have even  owned, operated and sold a music store that catered to the karaoke market.

But all of that experience over the years has lead me back to the place I love the best and that is working for you!  As an independent DJ & MC, I get to work with the best clients in the world.  I cherish the Brides & Grooms that are putting together their special day.  I love working with schools to make sure their kids get the most value in a safe and fun way.  My corporate clients are some of the most innovative and exciting businesses anywhere!  I just love working with people.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey and thank you to my current and future clients for continuing to put your trust in me.

There is nothing like a Junior High School Dance!

February 14th, 2011 by Mike

Back in “the day” we were lucky to even get a DJ with a decent sound system at our Junior High dances. But these days, kids are more sophisticated and competition is fierce. That is why I offer complete packages that include great sound, LED Lighting, and even big-screen video with (age-appropriate) Shadow Dancers.

Dual Video Screens with LED Lighting

Dual Video Screens with LED Lighting

The sound fills up the gym or cafe-gym-a-torium without being too loud and the lights and big screen keep enough light on the kids to make sure the grown-ups can see everybody is behaving.

Shadow Dancers add an element of fun and encourage dancing without being over-the-top.  We can even add a themed video to match any theme you may have in mind.

As your disc jockey, I am mindful of the concerns of parents, teachers, and students and am able to balance the restrictions of school district policy with the expectations of the students.  Even with all this in mind – it is always a great time!

The Metroplexers move ahead in 2011

January 11th, 2011 by Mike

When you are a professional disc jockey and a musician, you get to see a lot of fun events.  Super Bowl parties are coming soon and The Metroplexers are ready-to-go with a brand new look and sound for 2011.

Molly, Kyle, Larry and Mike (me) are all “real players & singers”.  Did you know that a lot of party bands are really playing to pre-recorded tracks?  Not us!  We work hard to make every note played and every word sung the best that we can.  Our unique blend of four musician/singers has us sounding like bands that are often twice our size.

That’s good for us all, because we can fit on any stage and in any budget!

Thanks to Tom Petroski for mixing our sound.  Check out our new demo:

2010 was a great year for weddings.

December 20th, 2010 by Mike

As we close out the first decade of the new century, I took a look back at some of the brides and grooms, party-goers, and families that made each of my DJ & MC events in 2010 so special.

I use the word “special” a lot, but when events come only once-in-a-lifetime, I think no other word has quite so accurate a meaning. All of the people in this video, were my clients (or guests of my clients) in 2010 and spoke to me about their event and how they felt at the time.

Brides & grooms that just got married deserve to have the best reception possible and that only happens when you hire a person who has been part of enough wedding receptions to know what to do and when to do it; what to say and when to say it.

I am fortunate to be a full-time professional, and as such I take my career very seriously (yes, “fun” can be a serious endeavour!).  Each event is different.  So I meet and speak with my clients numerous times in advance to make sure that I understand what they want.  That’s why my slogan is “Experienced – Professional – Fun”.

Thanks to all of my wonderful clients (many who are now friends) that made my work so special for me in 2010.

Dancing Shadows Big Screen Video

November 16th, 2010 by Mike

This is one of my favorite ways to bring a DJ show to Junior Highs and High Schools. Double big screens project cool “dancers” from behind that give the impression of live performers.

There is never any inappropriate content, but it does give a more grown-up feel; kinda like a night club. My music at these events is always the latest stuff that kids want to hear, but it is edited for radio (in other words – clean edits).

Usually school dances at a Junior High will last for 2 hours on a Friday night, so our prices reflect that and give you the most bang for your buck anywhere!
