Night or day – I love all kinds of weddings.

April 23rd, 2011 by Mike

Wedding receptions each have their own energy.  Some call it the vibe or atmosphere.  Whatever it is, it is the way the event makes you and your guests feel while you are there and how you remember the day after it has happened.  Most of the time it is not possible to know what the vibe will be at an event before you get there, but last month at the wedding of Lindsay & Jon, I knew we were in for a great time.

A wedding reception that happens in the late afternoon or evening should be handled differently than one that happens at night.  People are less inclined to dance and “party” during the day than they do at night.  If alcohol is served, there is usually less consumed during the daytime events than at night (not always!).  And people often have something else to do or somewhere else to go after a daytime wedding reception.  So all of these things should be in the mind of a wedding disc jockey when planning the flow of a daytime wedding event.  Often times, daytime events are scheduled that way in order to get special pricing discounts for price-sensitive couples.  In the case of Lindsay & Jon’s wedding, we did some fun stuff, talked a lot in advance and planned accordingly.

Lindsay had a fantastic display that incorporated a vintage wedding dress from her family.  Also, in lieu of a standard guest book, she had an awesome Wish Tree that guests could write a special message on and hang ornament-style in the tree.

Color-wash lights were used in the room to enhance the decor even though the room was the brightly & naturally lit fellowship hall at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Richardson.

When planning her event, Lindsay and I talked a lot about music selection.  Wants and don’t-wants.  Specific songs and artists that they would like to hear and, ofcourse, special dances.  I even created a special music edit in my studio to make their grand entrance truly one-of-a-kind.

But even the best songs ever written will not always succeed in getting guests up to dance during the middle of the afternoon – so what’s a DJ to do?  The fear of having an obnoxious, over-bearing DJ is often expressed to me by my brides, so I am always careful when putting together events that encourage and engage the guests at a wedding reception.  I never want to embarrass a guest or have fun at someone else’s expense.  So we have special music tools that can be used to gently encourage dancing and celebrating such as an anniversary dance or couples dances.  We even can help the guests get to know their newlywed couple better by playing a wedding Question & Answer game.

All of these options are discussed in advance and used only when appropriate.  Then as guests feel more comfortable in the party atmosphere of the afternoon, the formalities melt away and the smiles come out.  People loosen-up and start to wiggle in their seats.  Then when the right song is played, people can’t help but get up out of their seats and dance – even when all the lights are on at five o’clock in the afternoon!

Soon enough it was time for a bouquet & garter toss followed soon after by the last songs of the afternoon and another special, wonderful first night together for a happy couple…

Make a (wedding) vow to be debt-free…

April 19th, 2011 by Mike

What does money management have to do with hiring a DJ for my wedding?  Who is this guy that is writing this article anyway?  What does he know?  Well…

Lately I have had some interesting conversations with brides & grooms about their wedding expenses.  I am pleased to say that one of the trends that I have recently observed is that brides & grooms are seeking to have wedding ceremonies and receptions that do not cause them to go into debt.  Call it “the new economy”, being frugal, or just being practical – brides & grooms these days want the most value for each dollar spent.

Among so many other things (like playing music for example), a good wedding DJ & MC should also bring you a wealth of knowledge about how to speak with other vendors, tips and tricks to save money, cautionary tales of ways to avoid getting ripped-off, how to receive value-added packages etc.

As an experienced wedding disc jockey, I have seen lots of vendors in action, so it is in my best interest to make sure that my bride & groom will be happy on their special day.  If I can help them save money along the way with different ideas or recommendations, then I see that as an unwritten obligation.

Yes, I am a wedding professional.  But I am also a happily married parent of three kids and I know the hardships and stress that money problems can bring a family.  As I see young people moving toward their wedding day, I am always aware that the number one cause of marital strife is non-other than debt & money problems.  This surprises some.  But as our society seems to be getting better educated in the ways that money works, I am pleased to see the trend of moving away from frivolous expenses and putting money where it will mean the most on your special day.

The American Disc Jockey Association conducted a survey of brides just after their wedding day and determined that the one item above all others (except for the venue) that they would have paid more attention to was the wedding reception entertainment (like a DJ or Live Band).  In the minds of most guests, the wedding DJ & MC (more accurately the music played and the announcements made) were the most critical factor to the success of the event.   This means that the success of the DJ & MC contributed to the overall success/failure of the event regardless of the quality of the food, flowers, videographer, photographs, dresses, formal wear, decorations, party favors, etc.  This is what adds value!

When making the selection of key components for your reception try to “remember what people remember” and that getting the cheapest price isn’t always the best value.  Also remember that getting into debt to pay for a one-day event can put a touch of grey in what should be a beautiful day.  Brides & grooms receive a lot of gifts on their wedding day, and one of the best gifts to give yourself is a wedding day that is debt-free.

Note: even if you are not one of my happy couples, I am pleased to share tips & tricks with you to save money on your wedding day.  Feel free to email me at mikemahnich@gmail.com.

High-flying wedding reception hall.

April 16th, 2011 by Mike

Last week I had a great time participating in a wedding professionals open house at the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum.  The museum is an unusual place to have a wedding reception and can accommodate anything from small parties up to hundreds of guests.  It is also available for private parties, corporate events, socials, fund raisers, etc.  There are museum tours, but the biggest attraction (literally) is the classic DC-3 airplane in the main hall.

Special thanks goes to Toan Nguyen at City Kitchen Catering for hosting the event.  There were about 50 couples that were invited to the event and we had several terrific vendors including: Helmutwalker Photography, Durham Video Photography, Wedding Decor & Design, and Mid Cities Florists.  All these vendors do really beautiful work, so please contact them for more information.

This MeetUp group charges admission ($20.00) at the door and you must sign-up through www.voicesvoices.com.  The group meets at La Madeline on Mockingbird and 75 near SMU.  Come early to eat; class starts at 6:30pm and lasts 2 hours.
